Confessions of a Casino Slot Supervisor

November 19th, 2011 by pattydgen

Ever since the beginning of time man has relished in the thrill of “hitting the jackpot.” Really…it’s not that hard to envision how happy the caveman was when he came walking around the mountain only to find a massive beast laying in his path, dead because it was struck by a falling boulder. He didn’t know the word, but pretty sure he did the “jackpot” dance.

History is riddled with tall tales and stories of instant riches from ancient explorers to Caribbean pirates and from tomb raiders to the tiny old man with his metal detector on the beach, It’s in our nature to jump with joy whenever so fortunate as to instantly find the “golden egg.”

Living in these futuristic times of plug and go or click and your there, our microwaveable lifestyles allow to many jackpot moments. O.K., because got casinos. Whether it’s a cruise ship, a river boat or an Indian reservation outside of town or you actually save up and take a vacation to Vegas, people love to gamble. People love to triumph !

As a slot supervisor for eight years in a well known establishment ( which of course will remain nameless), I was privy to a lot of things the public was not. In this article not going to cover the darker side of gambling, I think we all know it exists and anyone in need of help can find it through either the yellow pages or most casinos offer a helpline themselves.

No, what I am going to reveal are some of the tiny nuances and subliminal hurdles that are strategically set in your path to jackpot-ville. First let me that even knowing these tips of the gambling trade, it’s a safe bet ( no pun intended – well maybe a ) that as soon as you head out your front door on your quest for fame and fortune at your designated destination, your going to totally forget them.

I’d like to share with you nine words of wisdom told to me by a Federal Gaming Agent one evening as we drove over a hill only to see the twinkle of millions of lights illuminating a city alive with hot action. “See all this, they build it on winners.” Remember those words right before you enter the front doors of any gambling house and give yourself half a chance.

Carpet Color - It’s not random and they did not pick it because it was on sale. The color and pattern of the carpet in casinos were very carefully chosen by trained psychologists adept in understanding human responses to different stimuli. Bright reds and purples with slashes of yellows, blues make a person anxious.

Glass Top Slant Machines - When you sit at your favorite video poker or any type of machine really, the glass is tilted at such an angle as to reflect into your eyes, not directly mind you, not like a flashlight waking you up but in a way to make your eyes and weary.

“Hot” Machines - There is a range ( so many pulls, spins, or hands ) in which all slot machines must hit there top prize. This too is not random and there is a theory to how they are set. Machines in high traffic areas are set to pay out more often, The idea is that more people will see patrons winning in this house. The tiny old machine in the poorly lite corner will still be good and might even have a hot streak, just not as much as the one right on the corner of a major intersection.

Super Winners - You know, those lucky folks that hit mega millions progressive jackpots while their waiting in line for the buffet, or the Bertha machine right at the entrance. Just make sure if you play those that you have max coins in. Otherwise you could spend the rest of your life thinking what might have been, and it happens a lot.

Players Club Cards - If you only go gaming once every three years for the weekend…don’t bother, but if your a regular …use the card, you will get something out of it like free food or free hotel rooms.

Credits - This one is a obvious, the casino doesn’t want you to think of it as but as credit. There are however some slot machines that spit the tokens out automatically into a loud metal tray, again this is purely to gain attention to all the winners they have.

Cocktail Uniforms - Another blatant move on the casinos part to “distract” the guest away from what they are doing and making them think about….well you get the picture. But forget, as as they are and whatever you think of them, many of these women are raising children on their own so forget to tip your waitress.

Camera Bubbles - As a final tip, when your in a casino ….be good. Those black bubbles up on the ceiling see everything. Do not for a minute think you can cheat in a casino because 24 /7 someones watching, and if their not then at least it on tape to be viewed if necessary. Here’s one you might not know, they have cameras in the parking lot too, and out back and on the roof and in the elevators, hallways, stairwells….so unless you mind being “watched” save it for your room.

So if gambling is for you, have fun don’t over spend, get sleep when you need it , take breaks now and then, eat good and oh yeah …those free drinks they offer, not really free. I saved the for last, if you do hit the huge jackpot, grab who you came there with and Go Home.

How You Can Save On Grocery Store Home Delivery

October 10th, 2011 by pattydgen

How You Can Save On Grocery Store Home Delivery Shopping for groceries online and having them delivered is one way to save on precious time and escape the supermarket’s long lines. Sure, buying stuff at online stores is not always the cheapest way to go, but many believe the convenience afforded by Internet shopping makes the extra dollars worth it. While Internet shopping can get pretty expensive, it does not have to be. You just need to apply a few of the same lessons you learned from shopping for groceries the old-fashioned way.

Grocery Home Delivery-Related Money-Saving Ideas

Grocery store home deliveries are a great timesaver for people who seldom can spare time to visit the local shops. Having the items delivered to your doorstep frees you to do other stuff. Apart from saving you time, doing grocery shopping online can also help you save a ton of money too. Here is how you do it:

• Keep it simple – When visiting online grocery stores, limit purchases to what are on sale. Like most neighborhood stores, most Internet stores offer weekly specials and deals you can avail of to cut down grocery costs.

• Opt for store brands – Majority of store brands are made in the same establishment or facility and feature the same formulas as the name-brand commodities. They only differ in the packaging and price. Store brand products are usually not that different from consumers’ name-brand favorities. When shopping for groceries online, you can save by getting the pricey competitors’ generic versions.

• Free shipping is good – Avail of free shipping. A number of online grocery stores provide reduced or free shipping for customer orders in excess of $50.

• Use online discount codes – The Net is a source of a variety of coupons. Different sites offer printable grocery coupons and promotional codes. Many web stores also provide home delivery coupons. Safeway and Vons are just some of the companies that serve up a wide range of grocery delivery discounts.

Grocery coupons change from one store to another and have expiry dates. Coupons need to be redeemed prior to their expiration. People can also sign up with grocery store savings organizations or clubs. The sources and directories for getting grocery coupons are found listed on the Net.

• Be preferred customers – Most cyber grocery stores let customers take advantage of deals online by giving them virtual favored or preferred customer discount cards. These cards work as they would in traditional stores. Customers use them to drive down the price of a few favorite grocery items.

• Get in bulk – Stocking up at favorite stores offering discounts on bulk orders is a good idea. If you have adequate room for storing groceries and as long as these belong to the non-perishables, you are looking at saving a good amount of money when you buy in bulk.

People these days are always on the lookout for deals and bargains. Storefront outlets are not the only places anymore where you can realize huge savings. There is money to be saved from grocery home deliveries. As with any type of shopping, comparing prices is still the best way to land the most affordable goodies so do compare before making a purchase.

During these tough times, you need to be able to save on your groceries. So for food and drink savings and other grocery discounts, check out the merchants featured at CouponTrunk.com.

No other general is going to succeed with such men in such a position [in Afghanistan]. The overwhelming lesson of Hastings’s article is not: “Get rid of McChrystal.” It is, simply: “Get out!”–Garry Willis

Thuggery is unattractive. Ineffective thuggery even more so. Which may be one reason so many Americans have been reacting negatively to the response of Barack Obama and his administration to BP's Gulf oil spill. … the Constitution does not command “no person . . . shall . . . be deprived of life, liberty or property, without due process of law except by the decision of a person as wise and capable as Kenneth Feinberg.” The Framers stopped at “due process of law.” Obama doesn't. “If he sees any impropriety in politicians ordering executives about, upstaging the courts and threatening confiscation, he has not said so,” write the editors of the Economist, who then suggest that markets see Obama as “an American version of Vladimir Putin.” Except that Putin is an effective thug.–Michael Barone

Much to the government’s discomfort and this Court’s uneasiness, the Summary also states that “the recommendations contained in this report have been peer-reviewed by seven experts identified by the National Academy of Engineering.” As the plaintiffs, and the experts themselves, pointedly observe, this statement was misleading. The experts charge it was a “misrepresentation.” It was factually incorrect. Although the experts agreed with the safety recommendations contained in the body of the main Report, five of the National Academy experts and three of the other experts have publicly stated that they “do not agree with the six month blanket moratorium” on floating drilling. They envisioned a more limited kind of moratorium, but a blanket moratorium was added after their final review, they complain, and was never agreed to by them. A factor that might cause some apprehension about the probity of the process that led to the Report. … After reviewing the Secretary [of Energy Ken Salazar's] Report, the Moratorium Memorandum, and the Notice to Lessees, the Court is unable to divine or fathom a relationship between the findings and the immense scope of the moratorium. The Report, invoked by the Secretary, describes the offshore oil industry in the Gulf and offers many compelling recommendations to improve safety. But it offers no time line for implementation, though many of the proposed changes are represented to be implemented immediately. The Report patently lacks any analysis of the asserted fear of threat of irreparable injury or safety hazards posed by the thirty-three permitted rigs also reached by the moratorium. It is incident specific and driven: Deepwater Horizon and BP only. None others. While the Report notes the increase in deepwater drilling over the past ten years and the increased safety risk associated with deepwater drilling, the parameters of “deepwater” remain confused. And drilling elsewhere simply seems driven by political or social agendas on all sides. … How these studies support a finding that shear equipment does not work consistently at 500 feet is incomprehensible. If some drilling equipment parts are flawed, is it rational to say all are? Are all airplanes a danger because one was? All oil tankers like Exxon Valdez? All trains? All mines? That sort of thinking seems heavyhanded, and rather overbearing.–Justice Martin Feldman

I made so many errors there it's pathetic. I made one of my favorite errors: “The mouse with one hole is quickly cornered.” That is key. There are certain decisions you make in life that are irreversible, that lead you into a path you can't get out of, and unless you have more than one escape clause, the adversary can gang up on you and destroy you. What else? I didn't have a proper foundation. I was not sufficiently private in my activities. I was playing poker with men named Doc. I must've made a hundred errors on that one, but those are five or six that come to mind. And then there's the greatest error of all, which is that I had delusions of grandeur. Unfortunately I was so successful for so many years in that particular field that I began to believe in my own success. I thought that because my method worked in markets that I knew about and had quantified, I could apply the same methods to something I didn't know about. And I had as an example Soros, who would always say, “I made the most money in things I don't know about.” … In both cases I was in over my head. I didn't have the capital to be strong enough to provide a backup in the case of unforeseen events. I didn't have a proper foundation. I was playing with adversaries who were stronger than me and who actually made the rules. My base of operations was not diversified enough, and I was vulnerable to forces I couldn't withstand. I was too vainglorious. In my opinion, those are recurring errors behind most disasters. … I'd had this incredible string of successes where I made 50, 100 percent, year after year. And in 2006 I'd won the award again as the best-performing fund—you can imagine how reluctant they were to give me the award a second time after my first disaster—but I didn't take account of this. I didn't have a stop-gain, if you will.–Victor Niederhoffer

One of the first card I ever played, and one of the simplest games, was Ancient Maid. (The war is probably simpler, but that's another tale.)

For those who have never played Ancient Maid, here are the rules with a bought deck Ancient Maid cards. This deck consists of several pairs of matching cards and an Ancient Maid card.

One player shuffles the cards and deals them one at a time, around the circle of players, until all the cards have been dealt. It does not matter if some players more cards than others. Each player looks at his cards and removes all the matching pairs of cards and places it on the table.

Then the players play alternately, starting with the player to the left of the dealer and moving clockwise around the circle. Who is at the train, take a card, unseen by the first player on your right to play the cards has left. If the map corresponds to a map in hand, that instead of two cards on the pile of matches. If you run out of cards, stop taking turns. You simply observe for the rest of the game.

Keep playing until the last pair of cards has voted. The player left holding the Ancient Maid loses the game.

You can play Ancient Maid with a standard deck of cards. Just add a wild card, which takes the place of the ancient maid.

You can shorten the game if you remove cards from the deck. A bought Ancient Maid deck is usually smaller than a deck of cards. You might, the 2, 3, 4 and 5.

You can also use the length of the game on how to base the matching cards. If you are with the rank and color (the six clubs fit only the six goals of Spades), the game is over. If you by rank alone (match of the Six of the club is either the six of spades or the Six of Diamonds Six of Hearts or the), the game is shorter. And if you are fit to rank and opposite color (the six clubs of either the Six of Diamonds or the Six Hearts), the game is an intermediate length.

You can also play without the Joker. You can use a queen from the deck, so that the unmatched queen is the ancient maid, or you can make a king, so that the unparalleled king of the ancient bachelor remove. Or you can remove a different card. You can even remove a card from the view of the players which card is removed.

You can remove specific number of cards. You can remove a king, a queen and a jack.

Or, multiple cards without the players can see, to remove them. To remove five random cards. If there are no pairs in these maps, there are five ancient maids. If there are a couple, there are three ancient maids. If there are two couples, it's just an ancient maid. No one knows what are the cards or spinsters, ancient maids how many are there.

They play, but, ancient maid is still a game of random selection. You randomly select a card from another player. There is some skill involved in the matching cards, but not as much skill as used in most other card games.

So how about changing the rules? How to play Ancient Maid, so it's your turn you will pass one card to another player?

The new rules are as follows. The cards are treated as in Ancient Maid. Each player card it still looks and removed all the matching pairs of cards and places it on the table. And the players play alternately, starting with the player to the left of the dealer and moving clockwise around the circle. But starts before the regular turns, the dealer takes a card from his hand and places it face down on the table near the player to his left.

Who is at the train, look at the card you passed. If this card matches a card in your hand, place, couple cards on the stack matches. Otherwise, insert the card back face down on the passed table. Pick a card from your hand and face down by the first player on your left, has to play the cards on the left. Then get the card that was handed to you and in your hands.

The rest of the game is played like Ancient Maid. The player ends with the Ancient Maid loses the game. But there is more room for strategy. You can track the cards that you pass and the cards are to be coordinated to maintain that. You can use this knowledge to choose to help you pass the card.

And ancient maid is still a simple card game.
